Tonmawr 6 Sports 22

The first  10 to 15 minutes of this game were quite even with Tonmawr frustrating the Sports with tactics very similar to those of Pyle earlier in the season. When denied possession, the Sports did not seem to have a 'plan B' as their game was very disjointed and random. It was not the body language that the loyal supporters had seen before. Except at Pyle. The home side took a deserved lead after 10 minutes when the Sports strayed offside and scrum half Jack Williams slotted an easy penalty. There was plenty of endeavour from the Sports and good hard yards being made by Alun Evans, Connor Brown and Lloyd Wilson. In fact it was the forwards that we're keeping the Sports in the game. When they forced Tonmawr to handle on the deck, it was Scott Callicott who levelled the scores and moments later following a similar offence, had another penalty chance which allowed the Sports to take a 3-6 lead.
Dan Donnelly took a bad bump in challenging for a high and looked not to last the half.
With the Sports still trying to gain their shape Tonmawr levelled the score some 10 minutes later when fly half Keiron Harris took a fine penalty to end the half all square at 6 a piece.

The change after the break saw the Sports regain their composure, and fluidity in the threes also returning and there was a bite in line breaks once more. There was extra energy input from well-timed substitute changes
With the regained attitude present it was to be only a matter of time before the Tonmawr defence gave way. A penalty was quickly conceded by Tonmawr and  Callicott restored the Sports lead to 6-9 witha successful kick after a high tackle on Gethin Stanford-Rosser, which also resulted in a yellow card for Tonmawr as Lewis Obbard switched to second row and allowed Dewi Rees to make a strong contribution at blind side.
At number 8, Andy Gill was doing what has become expected of him after Alun Evans has departed having softened up the energetic Tonmawr back row.

From a fine counter attack initiated by Callum Griffiths and supported by Lloyd Wilson, Gethin Stanford-Rosser and Chris Walker there was great inter-passing with these with the finishing touch being provided by Chris Walker who touched down in the corner. Callicott added the two extra to make the score 6-16 with fine touchline conversion with 15 minutes remaining.
Tonmawr were always a threat and ‘in the game’ and looked for field advantage rather than just taking three points when a mis-judged kick went dead the Sports launched another attack which resulted in another penalty for Callicott to convert. This had been the pattern of a stop-start game in which the referee struggled to keep fluid.

It was a measure of respect the Sports had for this young newly promoted side when with minutes left they chose to kick the penalty and not go for a touch line kick. It was the right decision as a bonus point try was not on the cards, so Callicott finished the game with a 100% kicking record of 17 points as the game ended 6-22. Next week the Sports are looking for good away support in the next round of the Bowl versus Vardre away KO 2.30.
