Bridgend Sports Mini and Junior Rugby Round Up 26.11.17

Ten teams took to the rugby fields for the Mini and Juniors to represent Bridgend Sports R.F.C. This week, as the club continues to build and support the development of players and the game. The mini teams made the short trip to Tondu for the sporting derby in the true traditions of the game 

 

Mini Teams

Under7s

The Under sevens enjoyed a round robin festival with games against Tondu, Pencoed and Bridgend Athletic to follow the derby theme. There was plenty of running rugby over the three games in a great advert for mini rugby.  Aled Rees ran in 7 impressive tries, he was also just as hot in defence with 9 tags. Ellis Kendall (1) Matthew Griffiths (1) Ollie Balmer (5) and Tyler Pascoe (3) scored seven tries between them and claimed their share of the tags ably supported by Oscar Gee and Seb Stowe. All games were separated by a single try. The Sports outscored Tondu 2-3, Pencoed edged the next 8 -7 and Bridgend Athletic the last 9-8. Ellis Luke was Sports star player of the week.

Under8s

The Under Eights were defeated 11 – 4 and 9 -5 by Tondu but still enjoyed the day. Sports try scorers were Rhodri Owen, Max Hearing, Evelyn Murray and Zack Hughes. Their star player was Rhodri Owen.

Under 9s

It was a good day for the under nines against a strong Tondu side. Every player played with commitment and showed some great skill with the off loads and solid tackling in defence. The Sports emerged victorious 14 points to 9. Paul Cain was awarded the team award for his never say die attitude and great effort.

Under 10s  

From wins and losses to a draw next as the Under Tens were evenly matched by Tondu. Tondu started the stronger, scoring three quick tries. The Sports woke up and showed some great character as they threw themselves into attack to dominate the rucks. Once the ball was secured, they played as a team with some lovely off-loading skills on display. It was six tries each in the end to the delight of both sides. Jacob Macleod was Sports player of the week.   

Under 11s

The Under Elevens enjoyed a 28 – 42 victory. They put in a great performance for the first 30 minutes as they kept their shape in defence and attack. Their defensive work forced Tondu into making errors. They also mastered the ruck to win quick ball so loved by the backs. With the game close at 7 -14 at half time they stepped up the pace in the second half to extend their lead to 7-42. Tondu fought back in the final five minutes to score three quick tries.

Junior Sides.  The Junior sides all emerged victorious from their games:

Under12s

The Under Twelves fought out a tense derby playing at Brackla. They out scored Tondu two tries to one with Will Ellis claiming the first try through some sharp sniping around the ruck. Megan Lewis added the second, showing great determination. Ieuan Pilliner added the conversion. To make the final score 12 – 5.  

Under 13s

The Under Thirteens hosted Caerphilly. They got off to a good start as Sam Barraclough and Sean Petty scored tries. The latter also being on fine form with the boot. Charlie Patterson added the next try when he backed himself from the Halfway line. Caerphilly scored two tries in response and the first half ended 27 – 10.  The Sports extended their lead in the second with further tries scored by Danny Wilson and Sam Barraclough. Sean Petty added the conversions to make the final score 62 points to 10.  It proved to be an excellent game with key performances from Max Hemsley and Keiron Saunders in defence.

Under 14s  

The Under Fourteens put in a great effort in their 36 points to 7 win over Maesteg Celtic at home. They scored six tries in a real team performance as players showed skill and speed. Tries were scored by Khadir Mader, Charlie Tomalin Reeves and Archie Faulkner Lerway. Morgan Rees and Josh Wilkinson added the conversions. The Sports man of the match was awarded to Khadir Mader for his excellent tackling, all round play and four tries.

Under15s

The Under Fifteens returned to winning ways against Gorseinon, a side with a rich tradition and notable international honours that include: Onllwyn Brace, Norman Gale and more recently Leigh Halfpenny, Dan Biggar and Ross Moriarty. The Sports scored early with three tries as the backs and forwards combined well. Gorseinon hit back, scoring 2 tries to take it close by half time. The Sports started the second half the same way they started the first by playing some lovely open rugby and scoring well-worked team tries. Gorseinon kept coming back at the Sports by getting points on the board themselves but in the end, the sports were too strong and finished comfortable winners with the final score Bridgend Sports 43 Gorseinon 31. Bridgend Sports try scorers were Dafydd Williams (3), Kurtis Lewis (2), Rhys Walters (1) and Jamie Pearce (1). Kurtis Lewis was well deserved man of the match.

Under 16s

Finally, the Under Sixteens crowned off a great morning to maintain their position as second place in the Ospreys Cup Table as they beat Porthcawl by 20 points to five. Sports try scorers were Deacon Coles (2), Jordan Davies and Fin Duffill.
