BRIDGEND SPORTS MINI AND JUNIOR RUGBY WEEKLY ROUND UP 19.11.18

The young players were raring to take the field this week , after many lost out on some game time last week due to the impact of the wet weather.  The Under Sevens, Eights , Nines, Elevens and Twelves were all in action.

Under Sevens

The under Sevens played Tondu in two competitive games on the 4G pitch at Parc Derwen. Tondu had 22 players so split into 2 sides. Both games were played at a fast pace with the Sports experiencing their  toughest test of the season to date. In the first game Tondu kept a solid defence line and  countered with some great tries. They showed fantastic team work for Tondu to win the first game. The Sports were more direct and worked harder as a team in attack in the second game, they also kept a sturdy defence with some great tagging to secure a deserved win. There were some great performances with 5 tries for Dion Williams & 10 tags for Cian Elward. The man of the match went to Eli McCausland for his direct running and being a great team player.

Under Eights

For the Under Eights, it was a case of  learning that something constructive comes from every defeat. The team hosted two great sides in the form of Valley Ravens and Tondu. The Sports did not win their games but there were many positives as the side put in a sound defensive performance. Players had fun and passed the ball at every opportunity and they changed the direction of attack frequently throughout the game. Ollie Balmer was  top try Scorer with 4 fabulous tries. Top tagger  was Archie Hall with 22 tags. The match results were

Bridgend Sports Blue 1 – Valley Ravens 9; Bridgend Sports Blue 6 – Valley Ravens 8; Bridgend Sports Blue 5 – Tondu 6; Bridgend Sports Red 0 – Valley Ravens 7; Bridgend Sports Red 4 – Tondu 6; Bridgend Sports Red 1 – Tondu 3

Sports try scorers were Ollie Balmer (4) Archie Hall (3) Rhydian Cronin (3) Gethin Roberts (2) Aled Rees (1) Mikey Heanue (1) Tomos Richards (1) Alex Bright (1)

Under Nines

The Under Nines hosted both Tondu and Llanharan, again at Parc Derwen. Tondu were first up and they produced some well drilled passing including switch passes that kept the ball in play and saw them stretch the Sports defence. Nevertheless, the Sports chose a more direct approach using their larger ball carriers to draw in the Tondu defence before getting the ball wider and into the gaps for the try line.  Brave tackling saw the Sports make several substitutions, but they battled on and marginally lost out on the draw as Tondu just edged the game 10-15.
The Sports decided to remain on the field to play Llanharan next. Having warmed themselves up against Tondu they quickly got the advantage over Llanharan with no less than seven tries to the visitors three. From the set piece the Sports were quickly into their opponent’s half and were able to capitalise with points before turning possession  over at the sixth tackle. Llanharan made some good runs and offloads of their own providing them with well-deserved tries, but the Sports made up for their narrow defeat in the first game with a 35-15 win in the second. Marley James was this week’s  Star Player, he scored his first try for the Sports,  breaking a few tackles in the process. Not satisfied with some strong running he went on to put in tackles that prevented the opposition from off-loading ball.

Under Elevens

The Under Elevens hosted Nantyffyllon at Newbridge Fields. The team enjoyed their run out and made up for lost time as they faced a strong Nantyffyllon team. The Sports fronted up well as they made some strong tackles and then dominated the ruck area.  The Sports scored some lovely tries through some good team work. Nantyffyllon never gave in, which made it such a good game. The Sports emerged as winners with a 45 – 35 final score in their favour.

Star player was hard to pick as the whole team played to the best of their ability, but Gabriel Burroughs was that one step ahead with his tackling, breaks into space and support play.

Under Twelves

The Under Twelves were again on fine form as they defeated a Neath Barbarians team 5-40 . The game was played over four 20 minute quarters which provided an opportunity for players to play in different positions and it also gave an opportunity for the coaches to see what areas which needed work. The Sports scored 6 tries and were once again excellent in defence.
