It was a mixed week of results for the Sports Mini and Junior Teams this week with most sides hitting the road to travel to away games, it was left to the Under Sevens and Thirteens to enjoy home fixtures. The Sports won all three of their matches scoring an impressive twenty-five tries and only conceding eight tries as they put in a great defensive display. It was a great team performance with all the players contributing across the three games. The man of the match was awarded to Cian Elward who scored seven tries, he was a team player throughout the games with his constant tagging and passing.

At Tondu the Sports played three teams Kenfig Hill, Nantyffyllon and Britton Ferry. All players handled the ball well to produce and some lovely running rugby. Under Tens

The Under Tens also enjoyed a full morning of rugby in another round robin at Bryncoch. After a slow start, the team pulled together to produce some exciting team play. The support in attack was excellent and the rucking was outstanding. It was pleasing to see some good handling and offloading to players in space. This week’s Team Player was Tom Curley for a fantastic effort in only his second game of rugby. The match results and try scorers were:

Under Twelves

Pencoed 0-32 Sports

The Under Twelves maintained their fine run of form as they had too much strength for the opposition and were rarely threatened. It was another solid defensive performance as they kept a clean sheet. The sides rucking was excellent again as the forward pack played as a unit.

The Sports provided game time for all as they opted to play several players out of position especially in the back line. It was good to see the ball go through the hands-on occasions as they scored a couple of good tries through Ben and Rhys.

Under Thirteens

The Under Thirteens also maintained their great start to the season as they hosted Nantyffyllon on the Bandstand Field. The coaches and players were aware that Sunday would provide a stern test of the investment in training and time, as the Sports faced a competitive Nantyffyllon team. The games between the two sides have always been close and at half time a solitary conversion separated the teams. Both teams really warmed up after half time to produce a second half that had everything that a good game of rugby should have. Playing on the wide Bandstand pitch, both teams found some space as the legs tired, to produce a match total of fourteen tries, in a real thriller. Nantyffyllon got off to a flying start to take a 0-7 lead with a try by Ieuan Kingdom which was converted by Joe Quigley.  The Sports hit back with two tries, Connor Jones and Cian John and a conversion by Ieuan Pilliner, only for Nanty to score again through Iestyn Tremlett. The Sports were to have the last score of the half with another Connor Jones try converted by Ieuan Pilliner.

Nanty started the second half as they had ended the first showing that they meant business scoring two early tries to race into a 19-27 lead. If the Sports needed a stimulus to the system to stir them out of a slumber they certainly had it. They knew they had to respond if they were to maintain their excellent start to the season and respond they certainly did. They re-discovered their form as at last things began to click. They scored five tries through Connor Jones (3) Mackenzie Dent and Callum Lewis, Cian John added two conversions.

Nantyffyllon had the last say with a try and conversion for the final score to read Bridgend Sports 48 Nantyffyllon 34.

It was a game that proved to be great advert for junior rugby, a slow first half that was scrappy at times followed by a second half that provided some skilful rugby from both teams.

Under Fifteens

Following last week’s success in the Ospreys Cup, the Under Fifteens had a tough day at Porthcawl where they went down to a string Rocks outfit.
