Under Twelves Bounce Back

It was back to winning ways for Bridgend Sports Under Twelves as they defeated Baglan in a closely contested encounter at home this week. Baglan made the Sports battle all the way until the final whistle in a game of a high standard supported by and equally high standard of refereeing. Both sets of supporters who were highly appreciative of the on-field efforts.

Bridgend Sorts kicked off, Baglan gathered but conceded an early scrum due to a knock on. The Sports put several phases of play together with some good rucking as they began to exert the early pressure in their opponents. It was not long before the pressure opened some gaps in the Baglan defence, Cian John saw a gap in the blindside defence and broke it with two scything side steps and then backed himself on the foot race to the line for the home side to take a 5 – 0 lead.

Baglan opted to kick long from the restart, full back Iestyn John ran from deep back up field making good ground to the ten-metre line before being hit with a tackle, the ball spilled forward. From the restart Baglan kicked downfield and were awarded a scrum five metres out as the chase forced the Sports to carry the ball over their own line. From the attacking five metre scrum, the initial Baglan attack was brought to a halt but a ruck saw Baglan retain possession and outside half Ross Williams astutely took the ball blind to force his way over the line for the try to bring the score level. That was the way it remained until half time.

The Sports knew they had to start well in the second half as both sides were beginning to grow in confidence. Both teams showed promise as backs and forwards combined to move the ball around the field, Efan Dyer, Chloe Gant and Mason Balmer were making good ground for the Sports and whenever Baglan attacked the back-row combination of Harri Williams and Thomas Coles snuffed out several forward thrusts and when the away team attempted to move it wide Cian John and Callum Lewis snuffed out any attacks through the back line. Baglan opted to kick long down field again but good counter attacking from the sports ensured they kept Baglan out of their half. Whilst Callum Lewis and Cian John closed off the Baglan back line in defence, scrum half Will Ellis, centre Dylan Morgan and wings Tom Chick, Joel Rogers and replacement Dylan Parry thrived in attack.  Their attacks forced a few penalties for the Sports to keep up the pressure. The pressure told and eventually Cian John made two breaks to breech the Baglan defence, he then passed to centre Dylan Morgan who worked hard to get over the line to restore the lead for the Sports.

Baglan came back strongly forcing the home side to concede several penalties close to their line, great defence kept them at bay and eventually the turnover came for Harri Williams to break out of defence before he passed to Cian John. He looked to have the legs on his opponents for a length of the field run in but he was hauled down ten metres into the Baglan half as he off loaded to Joel Rogers who was ushered into touch.  The Sports confidence was growing by the minute as they had countered a period of Baglan pressure through some smart play to take play out of their own half.  With confidence it was no surprise when the Sports extended the lead. Harri Williams stole the ball at a ruck, it was moved by the backs one way and then back the other, Cian John made another break, linked with his centre Dylan Morgan who backed himself to claim his second try and extend his sides lead to 15 points to 5 and that’s how it stayed until the end of the match. The Sports had shown much better attitude this week right from the kick off and deserved the win with credit going to both sides for producing such an enjoyable game.
