Under Twelves Venture to Gwent

The Sports Under Twelves ventured further afield for this week-end’s fixture. They visited the Gwent Valleys for a game against “The Cuckoos,” Risca RFC.  The contrasting shades of green and bronze glistened in the morning sun to provide an inspiring back drop to an equally inspiring game of quality rugby from two sides who set out to enjoy the occasion.

Risca proved to be the stronger of the two sides, but the Sports youngsters did not let the Gwent side have all their own way. Once again, the Sports paid a heavy price for another slow start which allowed Risca both time and space and in outside half, Jack Woods, they had a player who could cleverly control play. He made the Sports pay, as he scored two tries to take his side into a ten - nil lead, fifteen minutes into the first half.

Undeterred the away team dug deep and several players stepped up to put in the tackles, notably Harri Williams, Iestyn John and Theo Clarke.  Dylan Morgan, Callum Lewis, Ieuan Pilliner and Thomas Coles also contributed.   Their efforts eventually secured the Sports a supply of ball and having endured the early pressure the Sports managed to move the ball out to wing Callum Jones who scored an outstanding individual try, his first for the club. He took the ball out wide, just outside his side’s twenty-two, then turned the Risca defenders inside then out before using his pace to accelerate away and score at the other end of the field to bring his side within a score of their opponents.

The score lifted his team and they began to put a few phases of play together before Risca pinched possession and crafted out a good score for Will Williams, converted by Jack Williams for the half to end 17-5 in the home side’s favour.

A big response was required in the second half from the Sports to prevent a physical Risca side from running away with the game. The Blue and Whites contained the Risca attacks but they could not contain their outside half Jack Woods who orchestrated the game behind the scrum and with a little wizardry and pace found gaps in the Sports defence to run in two tries, one from deep in his own half the other following several waves of attacks.  He converted both to extend the lead.

Undeterred the Sports youngsters stuck at their task and put several phases of play together by making effective use of their power players Mason Balmer, Megan Lewis and Efan Dyer to create space. Their efforts earned a reward when debutant Dylan Parry was put in space down the blind side deep in his half, he made ground taking out a defender before putting his outside half Cian John into space and he showed he could also create space, to race down the touch line then beat the covering defence to score. Ieuan Pilliner added the conversion.

It was a case of what might have been for the Sports. If they start the game with a positive mindset each week.

The Sports youngsters will reflect and learn this as the philosophy of developing players for the long-term benefit of the game will pay dividends.  Their squad and game is growing each week as all plyers are given game time to aid their development.
