Under Twelves Sustain Momentum

Bridgend Sports Under 12s V Tondu Under 12s

It was a home derby against the Waterwheelers for Bridgend Sports this week. The game was played at Brackla. It was clear from the kick off that the local rivalry had helped stir the pride in both sides as they both competed well in all aspects of the game.

Whilst both sides enjoyed an ambition and a will to run the ball it was the Sports who dominated the territory and possession in the first half. This was partly due to some outstanding work from centre Callum Lewis and flanker Harri Williams both players were quick to tackle and isolate any key opponent who wished to attack. Their work stopped the attacks. They were also quick on their feet to steal the ball.  Their work was also backed by a strong team ethic which ensured support was always on hand to restrict any attempts Tondu made to gain ground.

Despite securing the lion’s share of possession and territory, Bridgend Sports were frustrated by a combination of some tenacious tackling and a few passes failing at key times.  In the cold conditions, it was a more direct route that eventually led to the first try that broke a 15-minute deadlock. The Sports took a five-nil lead when scrum half Will Ellis sniped around a ruck to score the classic scrum half try after a period of sustained pressure that saw forwards Chloe Gant, Mason Balmer, Thomas Coles and Megan Lewis and centre Dylan Morgan all involved.

It was a lead, the home team were to hold until right on the cusp of half time when Tondu managed to create a break down the tram line between the five metre and touch line which eventually saw them equalise, despite a great effort from Sports wing Joel Rogers who chased down the attack to make a tackle on the line. The half ended as it started with the game all square.

Buoyed by their try at the end of the first Tondu started the second half in confident mood. They secured possession and territory for the first ten minutes. The Sports absorbed the initial pressure with Iestyn John at the forefront of the defensive effort to halt any attack. Tondu looked to have created an overlap with a great opportunity to score from 35 metres out but a great covering tackle from Mackenzie Dent followed by Megan Lewis steal, saved the day for the Sports.  The tackle proved to be a turning point in the half.  Tom Chick and Abi Davies Jones were put in space by outside half Cian John. Both players did well to take play into the Tondu half on two sperate occasions.

The pressure eventually provided the Sports with a penalty, which they opted to kick to gain ground.   A pre-worked move from the lineout saw Megan Lewis charge and break through the Tondu pack. With the line in sight and her determination, she drove over to score the try and secure a hard-fought victory in a great derby. Ieuan Pilliner added the conversion.

Both sides deserved huge credit for their part in an entertaining local derby.
