Try Fest as Sports defeat Neath Ath 77-0

The first 10 minutes of this game saw Neath hold possession and the Sports defended well.
The blustery conditions were always going to be an issue and the use of the high ball and swirling wind was in the minds of both sides.
When the Sports did get the ball, they seemed to carry on where they left off against Swansea Uplands in their last game. The quick delivery of their ball from line out, scrum and the loose was perfect with the half-back combination of James Donovan and Darren Lewis giving great ball to the electric center combination of Scott Callicott and Callum Griffiths.
It was not long before Callicott notched up the first try and added the two extra points. Five more tries followed in the first half as the Sports dominated the game in all aspects of play. Tries wide out by Chris Walker and Lloyd Wilson were not converted with the wind very difficult to read but support running by Lewis Obbard on the right flank was again a try too wide for Callicott to add extra points, then Walker bagged his second try and good driving by Alun Evans ended the half with Callicott getting his second conversion and the half ended 34-0.

Evans started the second half as he ended the first with powerful running by this strong number 8, being rewarded with a score near the posts for Callicott to convert.  The next try saw rookie fullback Carwyn Dent look very lively as he joined the line and did not need the support of Roderick on the wing for an unconverted try. It was Dent again who was getting the feel of the pace of the game and his support was brilliant as he crossed for the 9th try as he rounded the defence to score near the posts a try converted by Darren Lewis and now the score was 53-0.

Now the home side were running rampant and although most of the tries were coming from the threes, the ball was being won and driven through the Neath defence by most of the Sports pack to make the initial breaks. Andy Gill had replaced Evans at number 8 and was running well, skipper Greg Thomas made many hard yards and Lewis Obbard and Connor Brown were each looking fit and fresh to the end. As were the half backs who continued to give the threes all the ball they needed. The next two tries looked as if this should be called the Chris Walker show as he scored tries 10 and 11 which were not converted but the visitors were truly demoralised by the Sports as all the subs took part and produced fresh legs against a well beaten side. It was only fitting that the center Callum Griffiths should get the next try as he and Callicott had been the architects of so many of the earlier tries for others. Darren Lewis added the two points and then that man Chris Walker ended the game with a fine piece of running with his 5th try that Lewis converted ending the game 77-0.

Next week the Sports look to take this form to Tonmawr as they continue their league programme before playing Vardre away on the 27th in the next round of the Bowl.
