Bridgend Sports 42 Vardre 10

The Sports opened their first game at home in a most lively manner. Leading from the front, new skipper Lloyd Wilson looked sharp as he charged down an attempted Vardre clearance, quickly fly half Dan James was in support, and a favourable bounce allowed him to score easily under the posts for a try that Darren Lewis converted. Dan James was again in the thick of the action moments later making a clear break and again it was LLoyd Wilson who almost got on the end of another try only to be denied by stalwart Vardre defence.

From the resulting scrummage a ruck was formed and prop Greg Thomas drove over for a well taken try. The conversion from Lewis hit the posts and after just ten minutes the Sports were leading 12-0. From the kick off the Sports make a simple error and allow Vardre to get good field position from which their tight forwards show their strength and Kyle Hill drove over hard yards for a good try. A well taken conversion from full back Richard Brunton reduced the lead to 12-7 and Vardre looked stronger. Now the Sports returned to the Vardre half and are camped there for some time, patiently keeping possession with Darren Lewis keen to keep the ball alive and the Sports threes moving forward. The handling was better than last week but still not quite as sharp as it should be.

The Vardre best forward was Kyle Hill and he ran well all afternoon but when he was felled by flanker Cory Thomas he just refused to release the ball and the flanker earned the Sports a penalty that Darren Lewis used to extend the Sports lead to 15-7. Straight from the restart a silly Sports error allowed Richard Brunton to keep Vardre in close touch at 15-10 with a good kick. The next Sports try came from Gary Punter stealing a Vardre lineout ball, quickly feeding Darren and the threes with Cory Thomas linking well with Nathan Collins before he offloaded to his partner in the center, Ken Morris who made it look so easy to score in the corner for an unconverted try as the half ended.

The fitter Sports took control of the second half and it was not long before they disrupted the Vardre scrum forcing them to handle in the scrum. Darren Lewis took a quick tap penalty made 15 yards before neatly passing to right wing Jamie Williams who scored the bonus point try in the corner.

Now the score was 25-10 and the Sports were looking to keep the ball alive all the time and after some more patient ball retention and excellent ball distribution from Nathan Collins , and Jack Evans the ball found Jamie Williams and he scored in the same corner for his second try, this time the kick was from Nathan Collins but it too fails. The Sports then made some important substitutes, and with his first touch of the ball Gareth Bartlett made a good run through the center of the field before linking with the threes and another substitute Mark Smith with fresh legs, but it was Dan James who finished off this, the best try of the game but was forced out wide where he scores and the try is another unconverted one taking the score to 35-10.

Vardre kept trying to run the ball and when they are indecisive on the right wing it was Cory  Thomas who was so quick to disposess them and from deep in the Sports half the home side improved on the last great try with another. From the turnover Nathan Collins showed his pace and made 30 yards, and in support it was only fitting that it was Captain Lloyd Wilson who was at hand, and his try under the posts ended the game with Darren Lewis adding the extra points to make it 42-10 and a really fine Sports Club performance in true Sports Style.

Next week the Sports travel to Porthcawl for a local derby game with the KO at 2.30pm.
