Sports suffer opening day defeat

The home side started off at great pace and their close quarter inter-passing and support was very impressive. It took all the resolve of a well disciplined Sports side just to contain them. And that is exactly what they did. There could have been a few tries for Cwmgwrach in the first ten minutes if it not were for the good Sports defence. However, although the Sports gave away a penalty in front of the posts, somehow Cwmgwrach missed the easy chance to take the lead. There was lots of pressure at this stage and Ryan Russell at full back looked confident under the high ball.

After 15 minutes or more of this pressure the Sports finally got into the Cwmgwrach half. From a quick tap penalty in the Sports 22, the threequartes quickly showed their pace and Jack Evans is delivered early ball on the wing and made 40 meters before chipping ahead. On the bounce it was quicksilver openside flanker, Cory Evans who was first to the ball and a possible try scoring pass to new skipper Lloyd Wilson just failed to go to hand. Now it was the time for the Sports to put their  hosts under pressure. They were camped in the 22 meter area for 10 minutes, not taking penalty kicks at goal, choosing to go for tries and were rewarded on the stoke of halftime when the threequarters moved the ball quickly to James Coles on the right wing, full back Ryan Russell was in support and he scored in the corner for an unconverted try to end the half with the Sports leading 0-5.

The second half started as did the first with big pressure from Cwmgwrach. With two forced substitutions at half time the Sports again defended well but a pivotal point of the game happened when putting in to their own scrum on their own 5 meter line the Sports failed to control a turning scrum and the ball popped out awkwardly for Rhodri Morris to be gifted a try under the posts converted by outside half Dai Felton and the visitors took the lead 7-5. A further injury to Josh Collins disrupted the Sports pattern of play with wingforward Cory Allen having to make his debut in the centre. The Cwmgwrach half backs were controlling the game at this point and it was Dai Felton who started an attack from deep in the Cwmgwrach half, he was well supported and after some neat inter-passing he was the man to touch down for a try quite wide out. His conversion failing. The Sports then, through tight forward play gained good field position which they held for 10 minutes or so and forced Cwmgwrach to defend at all costs.

There were good performances from Rhys Obbard, Matthew Donally and nice to see Ryan Wallace back in action. Eventually skipper Lloyd Wilson opted to take a penalty conversion that Jayce Evans struck well. The last 10 minutes of the game was all Sports pressure but some poor finishing in the threes allowed Cwmgwrach off the hook.

The game ended 8-12 but the Sports can take many positives from this performance and the home support in the Cup against Cwmgwrach on 26th September will expect a more polished performance and a win! Next week the Sports play their first home game at the Bandstand field against Vardre, KO is 2.30pm
