Match Report
08 September 2014 / Team News

It might have seemed like an eternity to some since we last played, but today saw the first game of the new season kick off against Llantwit Major away. Most will remember what a well drilled side Llantwit Major was from when we last played them. They were probably one of the most testing sides that we had come across last season.
The game was played in three periods of 10 minutes each. Sports started the first game but Llantwit’s defence was so tight and so quickly up on top of us that it was difficult to make any progress along the pitch. Although Sports managed to keep possession, no progress was made into the Llantwit half, and after a few minutes of play possession was lost with Llantwit taking full advantage of a spilled ball to open the scoring. Llantwit dominated the first game scoring again shortly after, their team pouncing on any loose ball. Sports pulled one back with McKenzie scoring with an excellent run from the half way line. Llantwit struck back almost immediately, taking advantage of another loose ball to score again. Shea managed to pull another back with the first game ending 3/2 to Llantwit.
In the second game Llantwit quickly scored the opening try from the kick off, with another score following a few minutes later. Unfortunately Sports were unable to respond and the game was lost 2/0. Sports found it difficult to maintain possession and with some wild passing and spilled ball, Llantwit took full advantage of our mistakes.
The last period of play was the best of the day from Sports. There were fewer mistakes and less ball spilled. Sports were leading all the way through this period and looked as if they might win but Llantwit pulled back a try in the last few seconds of the game. The final score being 3/3.
The first game of any season is always a difficult one, especially when it’s played away from home. There are the new rules to get used to, and it became apparent very early on in the game that Llantwit had interpreted them differently. The boys coped admirably against today’s opponents and much promise was shown by the lads. When all the new rules are understood and practised all bodes very well for the forthcoming season. Well done boys!
Today’s squad: Fynn, Sam, Oliver, Nathan, Tristan, Shea (2), McKenzie (3), Dan , Jacob, Kurtis, Joe and Declan, Robert, Morgan, Max, Dylan.
