Bridgend Sports Under 9's v Porthcawl Under 9's

PORTHCAWL UNDER 9’s   1    BRIDGEND SPORTS UNDER 9’s   7

It was a trip south for Bridgend Sports Under 9’s on Sunday morning for a game against the young Seaweeds.   Playing three periods, ensuring all players shared game time, the young Sports squad continue to develop although, this week’s performance was not as good as the previous week. Nevertheless the squad left the seaside with a fine win.

In the first half, Porthcawl started the game attacking the away team from the off , they were however, met by a team determined to defend and good defensive organisation eventually forced the home team into touch. From the restart, Sports Joel Rogers broke from his own half and raced down the wing for a fine opening score.

Porthcawl restarted and were met by a first up tackle from Callum Lewis, they managed to keep the ball live and looked certain to score, until an excellent cover tackle from Joel Rogers took the attacking player and ball into touch.  The Sports took  possession and attacked from deep again with a good period of play. Initially Dylan Morgan took play across field, but soon found supporting players; Mackenzie Dent, Ben King, Tyron Davies, Callum Lewis and Joel Rogers who took play deep into opposition territory. They were held up just short of the line and lost the ball in the tackle.   Porthcawl restarted but pressure by the Sports led to a spilled pass.  From the scrum,  a pre-planned move saw Dylan Morgan cruise over the line for the Sports to take a 2 – 0 lead. Joel Rogers scored the third and final try of the first half after the Sports again forced a turnover.

Three nil up at the start of the second half, the Sports grew in confidence with Morgan Edwards setting off on a determined run, he gained good ground then linked with Joel Rogers who beat three defenders before passing to Callum Lewis for him to score.

Porthcawl tried, once again, to attack from the restart but despite pressurising the away side for a short period, the young seaweeds lost possession.  Sports player Tom Chick broke out of defence with an elusive run, Tyron Davies and Dylan Morgan were on hand to move the ball out to Callum Lewis for him to claim his second try.    The sixth try of the game was scored following a period of solid running from Jodi Keane, Dylan Morgan , Iestyn John and Callum Lewis with the latter player claiming his third try for Bridgend Sports to lead 6 – 0 going into the final third.

The final period of the game was a more even affair with the Sports conceding a couple of penalties.  The Sports scored first, following a run from Mackenzie Dent and then Cian John who evaded several tacklers before returning a pass to Mackenzie Dent for him to score in the corner. Porthcawl to their credit dug in and finally managed to retain possession in attack which enabled them to test the Sports for the last period of the game. Sports defended with Alex Stimpson, Dylan Morgan , Mason Balmer, Tom Chick and Tryon Davies again putting in a solid performance.   Porthcawl stuck at it and claimed their reward, with a try from the last move of the game, to make the final score 1 – 7 to the Sports.

Bridgend  Sports host Abercynon at Newbridge Fields next Sunday and will be keen to improve on last season when they narrowly lost at Abercynon. Training this week switches to the Maes-yr-Haul School at Broadlands, Bridgend 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
