St Peters 22 Bridgend Sports 2nd XV 35

Thanks to a last minute arranged fixture, Bridgend Sports 2nd XV travelled to the capital to face a strong St Peters XV. Buoyed by recent victories at Penygraig, Sea View and Maesteg Celtic the Sports were hoping to keep the momentum going and build on past weeks performances.

The Sports started the match much the brighter side, as immediately their scrum looked dominant. After pressurising the home scrum 10 metres out, the Sports were able to disrupt and release quick ball to their backline, with wing James Coles cutting a lovely angle to score unopposed under the posts. Try converted by No 10 Jayce Evans.

The remainder of the 1st half saw the Sports dominate every facet of the game, with the menacing back row of Justin Russell, Dai Dent and Brennig Emmanuel putting in tremendous work-rate in the loose. Scrum half Matthew Davies marshalled his pack well and captain Justin Hostettler-Davies competed well in the lineout. A further penalty kick and two great individual tries from Evans saw the Sports power into a 22-3 half time lead.

The second half saw the Sports lapse a little in concentration and this allowed the St Peters forwards to get into the game more, resulting in a well-deserved try from close range. With play breaking up a lot and the game becoming a scrappy affair, the home side were gifted a second try after some suspect defence at the back saw the fullback round off a good counterattack. This set it up for a nervy last 20 minutes before outside half Evans completed his hattrick, crashing over after some sublime backline play from centres Jake Watts and Jason Burton. Evans taking his personal match tally to 30 points.

Despite some concerted pressure from the home team, some stern defence on the Sports try line for 10 minutes, the Sports managed to hold firm and a cheeky last gasp drop goal from Evans secured a 35-22 victory.

Bridgend Sports 2nd XV now unbeaten in 4 games and with a large squad developing, signs are encouraging for the club as players continue to push for 1st team honours.
