TONDU UNDER 9’S     V   BRIDGEND SPORTS UNDER 9’S   3

Bridgend Sports Under 9's made the short trip to play Tondu on Sunday. The young players knew that they would need to improve on the previous week's performance, if they were to compete with a side that had beaten them in a tournament at Maesteg, a couple of weeks previous.

The Sports were quickly into their stride from the start, a fine break by Joel Rogers with good supporting play and passing was finished off with a try from Mackenzie Dent.

Tondu responded from the restart but encountered a resilient Sports team determined to defend. A cover tackle from Tom Chick gave Sports ball from the breakdown. The Sports failed to capitalise from the good work by then spilling the ball in the tackle themselves.  Tondu regained possession from the scrum but some solid tackling from Sports players Tom Chick, Jodi Keane Tyrone Davies, Joel Rogers, Thomas Coles and Dylan Morgan kept the home team at bay for a short period.  The Sports youngsters had learned from the previous week's games that they should not give the opposition space.  Tondu levelled the scores however, following a period of persistent pressure with a try from Charlie Edwards.

Sports youngsters attacked from the restart with Callum Lewis rediscovering his form he proved to be a threat whenever he had the ball, he combined well with supporting players to keep play in the Tondu half. Determined running and pressure saw Tondu concede a penalty. A quick restart led to a try for the Sports by Mackenzie Dent who was on hand to power his way through the middle of the home defence.

Mackenzie Dent scored his third try of the game following another period of passing and support play. With a few substitutions to  both share the load, and to develop the squad players, the Sports lost some rhythm in this match, which was turning out to be a typical local derby with both sides showing great commitment and determination.

Starting the second half 3 – 1 up, the away team attacked from the start but now it was Tondu’s turn to put in some solid tackles to see the Sports spill the ball. Tondu attacked from the scrum working the ball out wide for Dan Burgess to speed down the touch line to score in the corner.  Tondu scored a further try through Logan Fitzgibbon, after some close range attacks on the Sports line.

The game entered the final quarter with Sports mounting a series of sustained attacks; Callum Lewis and Dylan Morgan were again prominent.  On one run near the end of the game Callum Lewis slipped ball to Joel  Rogers the ball was then fed to Tyron Davies and onto Ieuan Pilliner only for him to be bundled into touch inches short of the line.  No further score followed.

Bridgend Sports Under Nines had put together a fine collective effort with the players showing commitment and concentration. Next week the team are home to Maesteg before they travel for a Bridgend Sports club day to the Liberty Stadium where the club are guests of the Ospreys at the crunch Ospreys v Blues derby match.  New players are always welcome to Bridgend Sports Under 9’s with training every Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Bandstand Field. Come along to learn, enjoy and develop your rugby skills in a fun environment.
