BRIDGEND SPORTS UNDER 9’S 10 KENFIG HILL UNDER 9’S 8
Bridgend Sports Under Nine’s hosted Kenfig Hill at Newbridge Fields on Sunday morning. The teams agreed to play three sessions of ten minutes. Kenfig Hill attacked from the start, running in a try from the half way line after the Sports had attempted three tackles. The Sports youngsters struggled to settle into their defensive lines against the well drilled and organised Kenfig Hill team.
Eventually the Sports managed to pressure Kenfig Hill into a mistake with a dropped pass and from the scrum, Cian John went on a jinking run and linked with Tyron Davies who crossed to level the scores. The Sports tried to build on this with runs from Dylan Morgan, Reuben Thomas and Iestyn John. Their opponents were quick in defence and closed the attacks down forcing the Sports to lose the ball in the tackle on several occasions.
Kenfig Hill snapped up any loose ball and then exploited some defensive gaps in the first six minutes of the game to take a 1 - 3 lead.
A try from the Sports came from a good run from Rhys Wilson with Tyron Davies again in support to force his way over in the corner to make the score 2-3 before Kenfig Hill scored again. The Sports responded with a try from Rhys Wilson to make the first period score 3-4 to Kenfig Hill.
The second period proved to be even more competitive, the away team scored first, followed by a try from the home team through Mackenzie Dent. The Sports began to find their stride and probed the Kenfig defence with one jinking run from Thomas Chick which led to him being taken to touch just short of the try line.
From the restart the Blue and Blacks tried to move the ball but they soon began to feel the tackle pressure and started to lose ball in the tackle following some strong tackling from home players Dylan Morgan and Tyron Davies with contributions from Callum Lewis. The Sports eventually managed to move the ball wide out to Thomas Coles who scored the second try. Kenfig Hill responded with a try before the home team rounded off the second period with a try for Rhys Wilson following good passing and running with Ben King and Cian John involved.
The game entered the third period with the scores level at 6 – 6. The game followed the pattern of the previous two periods as Kenfig Hill scored first again , Sports responded with a trade mark touch line sprint from Reuben Thomas who raced in at the corner. With the Sports defence now much better with Dylan Morgan , and Callum Lewis in the thick of the tackling, well supported by , Tyron Davies and Thomas Coles the game was constantly on a knife edge . With the further pressure the Sports were able to secure possession and Dylan Morgan set off on a brilliant run to beat several players to score the next try which was a just reward for all his hard work.
From the restart, the away team showed their determination and competitive spirit to hit back immediately with a try. The Sports responded form the restart with Mackenzie Dent going on a run then changing direction to thwart the defence to score and put the home team in front.
The final score of the game came from Reuben Thomas, after Kenfig Hill were penalised deep in the Sports half for encroaching, Thomas Chick went on a jinking run passing to Callum Lewis who linked with Reuben Thomas for him to score in the corner.
The Sports Under Nines had managed to win the game 10 – 8 against a tough Kenfig Hill team that fought until the final whistle. Whilst the game was competitive it was played in excellent spirit. Both teams and clubs deserve to be commended. The Sports travel to Maesteg next Sunday for a tournament. Training is very Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at Newbridge Fields. New players are very welcome to join in the fun environment where the emphasis is on skills and development for all.
