Under 9's Lose Out in Thriller

KENFIG HILL UNDER 9’s    17  V       BRIDGEND SPORTS UNDER 9’s 13

Teams at any level know they will be in for a tough game when they visit Kenfig Hill. Sunday’s game for Bridgend Sports Under 9’s proved to be no different. On a sticky pitch, both sides provided a thrilling game for those parents and spectators who braved the cold wind that ripped through Croft Goch playing fields.

Kenfig Hill won the toss and were straight on the attack, a good tackle and swift work from Callum Lewis saw the Sports claim loose ball and then race up field with some stylish play and excellent handling skills from Jodi Keane, Joel Rogers , Dewi Worrall and Dylan Morgan who took the final pass from Callum Lewis, to score, for the Sports to take an early lead. Kenfig Hill were soon level, as they hit back immediately from the restart, when the Sports failed to deal with a powerful attack down the touchline.

Bridgend Sports continued to play an open style and they took the lead five times in the first period with tries from Dylan Morgan (2), Dewi Worrall, Tyron Davies and Mackenzie Dent. Each time they scored however, Kenfig Hill responded with a try and the first period ended 5 – 5 with Donovan Rankin proving a powerful influence for the Mules.

The scoring pattern in second period was almost the complete negative of the first period with Kenfig Hill scoring first, for the Sports to fight back and  level on each occasion. Bridgend Sports scored tries through Mackenzie Dent , Joel Rogers and Tyron Davies (2) whilst  Donovan Rankin and Eli Cowen were a constant and significant part of the Mules armoury.  Both players possessed the pace and physical power to trouble the Sports and see their side edge the period 5 – 4 and an overall game score 10 – 9 .

For the Sports , it was a case of a more team orientated approach with Joel Rogers, Dewi Worrall, Dylan Morgan , Callum Lewis , Tyron Davies , Alex Stimpson, Jodi Keane  and Mackenzie Dent all making a positive contribution.

Two further periods followed in this highly competitive game , Kenfig Hill took an early 2  - 0 advantage in the third period.  The Sports tried to hit back early, after Dylan Morgan broke out of the away side half and then linked with supporting players Jodi Keane, Tyron Davies , Thomas Coles, Thomas Chick  and Dewi Worrall,  but,  in the cold conditions they just couldn’t make the final pass stick. They persevered and were eventually rewarded when Joel Rogers carved his way through to bring the scores within a point. Kenfig Hill responded with two further tries only to see the Sports refuse to lie down as Callum Lewis , Joel Rogers and Tyron Davies made several skilful runs that resulted in tries for Mackenzie Dent and Tyron Davies. The period ended  4 – 3 with the score as tight as the officiating and Kenfig Hill leading 14 – 12 overall.

The pace and power of Eli Cowen and Donovan Rankin, for Kenfig  Hill, ruled at the end of the day, as they took the game beyond reach of the Sports in the fourth period. The home team powered their way into a 3 – 1 lead that the Sports could not find their way back from and the excellent gamed ended in a 17 – 13 victory for the Mules.

It was the third time for the sides to play each other this season with the Sports edging the first game 10 – 8,Kenfig Hill the second 2 -4 and this game 17 – 13.  Both teams’ young players deserve huge credit for their efforts in serving up an excellent feast of competitive rugby in this high scoring game.
