Bridgend Sports Under 9’s hosted Treorchy and were joined by Nelson for Sunday’s home fixture. The visiting supporters made their presence felt as the 3 games proved highly competitive with young players from all sides determined to impress.

  In the first game of the morning the Sports took the field against the Zebras. Defences were on top in the first quarter, with both sides turning over ball to their opponents as the defensive lines closed play down quickly. The home side broke the deadlock with a try from Dylan Morgan, who was making a welcome return to the ranks from injury, he received the ball ten metres out and carved his way through the Treorchy defence to score.

  The home side harried and pressurised Treorchy into errors from the restart and having retaken possession Bridgend Players mounted several attacks through good passing and support.  Tyron Davies , Mason Balmer, Mackenzie Dent ,Dewi Worrall, Jodie Keane and Dylan Morgan were ever present. A second try soon followed with Dewi Worrall scoring out wide to make the half time score 2 – 0.

The Sports started the second half, having made a number of changes to the side. They continued to dominate the game. Callum Lewis popped up in several attacks ably supported by Dylan Morgan, Tyron Davies and Ben King who charged forward.  Callum Lewis was rewarded for his efforts with a try as he set off on a run beating several players from five metres out. Treorchy hit back immediately with a try from Mackenzie Davies. The final score of the game was scored by the tireless Tyron Davies from the home team, following good support work from Callum Lewis, Morgan Edwards . Iestyn John and Alex Stimpson.  Bridgend Sports 4 Treorchy 1.

Treorchy and Nelson played each other next in a highly competitive game. The  lead changed hands on several occasions before ending in a 4 – 4 draw . Tries for Treorchy were scored by   Dylan Owen, Evan Williams, Cian Grifiths and Luke Morgan, with Nelson tries scored by Carwyn Payne (2) , Logan Yendal and Dan Taylor.

To conclude a highly competitive morning of rugby Bridgend Sports took on Nelson, the home team were made to work hard, as Nelson took the lead with an early try, despite the best efforts of Dewi Worrall and Tyron Davies to tackle their opponents. The Sports hit back immediately with a try from Dylan Morgan who sliced his way through the Nelson defence to score.  Nelson showed resilience by scoring from the restart ,as the home defence failed to be alert. Back came the Sports , with Mason Balmer and Mackenzie Dent setting off on charging runs and then linking with Callum Lewis, Jodie Keane , Alex Stimpson and Tom Chick  with the latter just failing to score out wide.  Following a further period of attacking rugby the ball was worked wide to home team player Tyron Davies to score the try to level the scores.  Solid tackling from Callum Lewis, Dylan Morgan and Dewi Worrall then kept Nelson at bay. Eventually the ball was turned over as Tom Chick gained the ball on the ground.   The Sports now retained  possession and attacked wide through Alex Stimpson who scored the next for the Sports to end the half, 3 – 2 up.

In the final period of the game , both teams fought hard to try and take the spoils , both sides scored a try a piece. Thomas Coles scored for the Sports and Logan Yendal for Nelson.  The Sports youngsters deserved the win and showed this week what they can achieve when the team works hard together and for each other.  Training takes place every Wednesday at 6 o’clock down at the Bandstand field, players are always welcome to join and learn in a fun environment.
