On Sunday 19th October Bridgend Sports U11s travelled to Porthcawl for a rematch after playing them at home a couple of weeks ago. Sports had a smaller than usual squad, but still managed 18 players to take on what we knew to be a strong side. Sports were looking to continue the improvement in tackling and rucking and did not disappoint the coaches in this regard. Unfortunately the handling let them down time and again and good positions were lost due to dropped passes, but at least the intention to play a fast open game was there for all to see. Unfortunately the handling errors often resulted in giving away possession and Porthcawl capitalised to open up a 30-0 lead (5 tries, 4 conversions). The Sports kept plugging away and eventually they managed to turn some pressure into points when Mac forced his way over in the corner after some excellent teamwork enabled Sports to camp on Porthcawl’s line. The try was converted by Ethan S. At this point in the game honours were pretty even, with no side giving much away in defence. Eventually Porthcawl managed to break through for a couple of extra tries to give a final score of 47 – 7 to Porthcawl.
The coaches were very pleased with the effort from all the boys and don’t believe the score reflected the effort put in and had a couple of passes gone to hand the scores would have been a lot closer.
