Wilson works his magic

Penygraig  2nd XV 10 Bridgend Sports 2nd XV 34

The Sports travelled to the Valley in buoyant mood with a strong squad of 20 players.

From the first whistle, the Sports started on the attack and despite the small narrow pitch the visiting three-quarter line always looked threatening.

Having been camped in the home 22 for the first 10 minutes the Sports were rewarded for their endeavours when scrum half Matthew Davies sniped his way over from close range, try converted by Rob Wilson. Outside-half Wilson was now controlling the game extremely well and the Sports pressure paid off after some scintillating attacking play from wing Richie Byrne and centre partnership of Ryan Lewis and Liam Evans, eventually saw centre Lewis bundle his way over for a second try.

Penygraig got their first try after some lack of concentration at the ruck area saw the home No 8 crash down the blindside to score in the corner. Conversion was wayward.

Outside half Wilson then took advantage of some lacklustre defence when he took a quick tap penalty and crossed unopposed under the posts to restore the 10 point cushion.

The Sports pack were performing well in the scrum with veteran front-rowers Craig Harris and Leon Solder, together with Andrew Gilby winning the power contest upfront. The lineouts were being keenly contested by 2nd rows Matthew Donnelly & skipper Justin Hostettler-Davies, forcing the opposition to spill ball which the Sports back row quickly capitalised upon. Sports debutant Jake Watts had a fantastic game at No 8 and was a constant thorn in the Penygraig side.

Penygraig’s never say die attitude though was rewarded mid way through the second half when their replacement prop charged his way over from close range. Again the conversion was missed.

With the time ticking away outside Wilson continued to punish the opposition with his kicking game as he slotted a couple of penalties and a cheeky drop goal to add to his personal tally.

The final play of the match saw centre Liam Evans pop over his own drop goal 20 metres out, which capped a fine overall performance from the Sports 2nd XV and the final score was 10-34 to the visitors.

MOTM Rob Wilson, together with Lewis and Byrne shone in the backline for the Sports and proved to be the difference on the day.

The Sports coaching staff will be pleased with this showing with many players stepping up to the mark and seemingly pushing for 1st XV places. The Sports will now look to take this renewed confidence into next weeks encounter with local rivals Pencoed.
