BRIDGEND SPORTS UNDER 9’S 8 PENCOED UNDER 9’S 0

Bridgend Sports under Nine’s are hitting a great run of form as the last month of the season approaches. The players are all contributing in both attack and defence which has been clearly demonstrated in their last two games with a 6 – 15 away victory over Beddau last week followed by this week’s success over Pencoed on a cold, wet and windy Sunday morning.

The teams played three ten minute periods.  Pencoed won the toss and made their intention clear from the start as in the first play they brought in their bigger players to take the ball up into the Sports half. The Sports had other ideas however and soon brought the attack to a halt with tackles that stopped the home team in their tracks, followed up by driving play that drove them back.  The pressure told and the ball was soon turned over and the home team’s initial possession advantage lost.

Having turned over possession the Sports attacked with skill, pace and power that soon had the opposition conceding their first try as Dylan Morgan cut his way through the home side defensive line.  Tries followed for Callum Lewis and Cian John for the Sports as each Pencoed re-start was met by a solid wall of Sports tacklers that placed relentless pressure on the opposition.

In the second period, with the ball in hand from the start , Bridgend Sports now showed their attacking intent with Iestyn John setting off on a blistering run from the off , he was stopped just short of the line  but good support play saw Thomas Coles on hand to crash over the line for the first score of the period.

Pencoed showed greater determination from the restart which was met by an equally determined effort from the away side as their defence ground each Pencoed attack down with Ben King , Callum Lewis, Dewi Worrall, Dylan Morgan , Iestyn John,  Joel Rogers, Thomas Coles and Tyron Davies all in on the action for the Sports. Tyron Davies was next on the score sheet for Bridgend Sports as he benefitted from a Ben King run. Ben King used his power on a number of occasions to drive holes in the home defence.  This try was followed by one from Joel Rogers,  who epitomised the team effort as one attack appeared to breakdown, he gathered the ball off the ground then switched the direction of attack , accelerated and used his pace to outsprint the home defence to score near the corner.

With Bridgend Sports taking a commanding 6 – 0 lead going into the final period, many a side would have bowed to the pressure but the Pencoed youngsters showed great character. But, as hard as they tried they could not penetrate a solid line of tacklers from Bridgend Sports who were putting in an inspirational performance.  Alex Stimpson, Ben King, Callum Lewis, Cian John, Dewi Worrall, Dylan Morgan, Iestyn John, Ieuan Pilliner, Joel Rogers, Thomas Chick Thomas Coles and Tyron Davies closed the opposition down with resolute tackling.   This effort combined with elusive running from Callum Lewis, the pace of players Cian John and Joel Rogers backed up with the ever present Dylan Morgan saw Tyron Davies claim two further tries for Bridgend Sports to run out 8 – 0 winners.

It was an outstanding team performance for Bridgend Sports with every squad member contributing to secure the victory in a game played in cold, blustery and at times wet conditions.
