Sports Under 9's Compete Well but Fall Short at Abercwmboi

ABERCWMBOI UNDER 9’S 5 v BRIDGEND SPORTS UNDER 9’S 2

It was a trip to the Aberdare Valley for Bridgend Sports Under 9’s on Sunday, for the first game of 2015. With many games affected by the bad weather and having already seen the week end scheduled fixture cancelled with Llanishen, a frantic Saturday night saw the Sports secure a fixture with a visit to Abercwmboi to play on their 4G pitch.

Abercwmboi started the game and soon took the ball into the Sports half, some early tackles and good defensive pressure from the Sports saw them gain turnover ball to run back at their opponents. Both sides tried hard to find a way through each other’s defence but no side could conjure up the required magic to score in the first period. It was evident that both sides were a little rusty with the occasional pass going to ground. For the Sports there were some notable efforts from Ben King, Jodie Keane, Callum Lewis, Tyron Davies, Dylan Morgan and Ieuan Pilliner in both attack and defence.

A change of players by both teams early in the second period saw the game significantly change. Abercwmboi benefited from an injection of players with experience and pace and they soon capitalised on a Sports error early in the second half. With ball loose on the ground, Cody Stone pounced and raced in to score for a 1 -0 lead.  The Sports almost levelled following a good period of pressure but frustratingly lost the ball just short of the line and as hard as they tried, some inexperience showed and they could not level the score. Two further tries from Cody Stent and Calem Chapin followed, for Abercwmboi to take hold of the game with a 3 – 0 lead.

Bridgend Sports Under 9’s eventually responded and were soon piling the pressure on Abercwmboi again, following runs from Cian John, Ben King, Ieuan Pilliner, Jodie Keane and Callum Lewis, but it was a combination of good support and passing from Thomas Chick, Thomas Coles that gave Tyron Davies the opportunity to register a score and the second period ended 3 – 1.

Going into the third period 3 – 1 down, Bridgend Sports started well by attacking from the off. They faced opponents who challenged every attack, it was some 4 minutes into the half before  Ben King found some space to break through the home team defence to set up a close finale with the score at 3 -2. It was however that combination of Cody Stent and Calem Chapin who had the last word with a try apiece to make the final score 5 – 2.

It was a very competitive game but Abercwmboi  were able to conjure up some magic through their young wizard Cody Stone who proved to be the difference between the two teams.
